Out of Gas?

Out of gas. Literally, we were out of gas. Larry and I left a New Year’s Eve party at the home of friends just in time to make it to our own home to ring in the New Year on our own. Great plan, if you are over 65.

Then, as fireworks exploded across the winter sky, an amber light broke forth on the dash and informed us that we would not accomplish our last goal of 2019. We would not make it home in time to welcome the New Year; we were out of gas.

Sure enough, as we pulled into the deserted petrol station, the digital clock in the car unceremoniously turned from 11:59, 2019 to 12 o’clock, 2020, and there we sat — we were out of gas.

Thank goodness, the reality only related to the fuel gauge, and not to our lives. But the irony of the situation brought a smile.

Regardless of how you made the transition from one year to another—from one decade to the next—The Art of Simple offers 20 questions to ponder and thus capitalize on the opportunity to move forward with a full tank.

From their list, I found these particularly helpful:

Pick three words to describe this past year.

What was the single most challenging thing that happened?

What was an unexpected joy this past year? What was an unexpected obstacle?

What was your single biggest time waster in your life this past year?

What was the single best thing that happened this past year?
